Health Hammer begins from the idea that tools of protest serve a purpose while a movement is being formed, while monuments are often created afterward—to remember, to remind, and to tend to a wounded collective once the movement has slowed or disappeared from public view.

Pulling the Flowers

Pulling the Flowers # 2026, Handwoven Jacquard weave, wool and cotton, 185 × 100 cm and 160 × 100 cm. Designed and Handwoven by Yujie Zhou.
Pulling the Flowers draws from an ancient Chinese drawloom depicted in T’ien-Kung K’ai-Wu, a seventeenth-century treatise on Chinese technology by Song Yingxing. The installation echoes the structure of the drawloom, a precursor to the Jacquard loom, in which weaving was organized across two levels: the drawperson sat above, controlling the pattern threads, while the weaver below carried out the physical labour of weaving.

Drawloom / Drawperson

Drawloom / Drawperson # 2026, Wood and 3D-printed PLA sockets, 437 × 159 × 265 cm. At the centre of the exhibition, a series of handwoven Jacquard textiles is stretched across a wooden drawloom structure. The structure is inspired by ancient Chinese drawlooms, precursors to the Jacquard loom. In these looms, an assistant was positioned above the loom, perched atop the harnesses and controlling the pattern threads, while the weaver worked below.

The Blank White Paper

The Blank White Paper # 2026, Handwoven Jacquard Weave, Wool, Cotton, and White Paper, 220 × 100 cm. Designed and Handwoven by Yujie Zhou.
The Blank White Paper is based on an image from a movement of people holding blank sheets of paper as a form of silent protest. Although the paper carried no written message, its blankness came to signify what could not be publicly spoken, turning absence itself into a form of resistance.

Until it Resonates

Until it Resonates # 2026, Handwoven Jacquard Weave, Wool and Cotton, 100 × 178 cm. Designed and Handwoven by Yujie Zhou.
Until it Resonates functions as an instruction manual for Health Hammer. The handwoven Jacquard textile depicts a sequence of bodies holding and using the hammer, translating gestures of tapping, pressing, carrying, and self-massage into a woven visual score.
Rather than presenting the tool as a static object, the work focuses on how it is activated through repeated bodily movement.

This Page Is Intentionally Left Blank

This Page Is Intentionally Left Blank # 2026, Handwoven Jacquard Weave, Wool and Cotton, 88 × 100 cm. Designed and Handwoven by Yujie Zhou.
This Page Is Intentionally Left Blank is a handwoven Jacquard textile based on a photograph of my own shadow holding a ladder and attempting to climb upward. In Chinese online culture, a “ladder” is also a colloquial term for tools such as VPNs used to bypass the Great Firewall.
